More images and details emerge about Ikea's Uppleva

Did you not get enough Swedish furniture pr0n yesterday with the announcement of Ikea's Uppleva? Well, we've got a slew of new images and some new details for you. As far as specs, it seems that the sets will be available in 24, 36, 40 and 46 inches and all are LED backlit. They'll also all sport WiFi and "smart TV" features including the Opera browser -- except for the 24-incher, which must accept its role as the runt of the litter. The TVs will also come attached to three different TV bench designs in six different finishes. While we weren't able to score our own units yet, M3 did and you can check out their hands-on out at the source link.

Dick Clark Mourned By Ryan Seacrest, Snoop Dogg, More

Tributes from Carson Daly, Russell Simmons, Big Boi and New Kids on the Block flood in after pop-culture icon's death.

The death of pop-culture icon Dick Clark has hit the entertainment world especially hard. Moments after news broke that the producer, radio personality and "American Bandstand" and "New Year's Rockin' Eve" host had died of a heart attack at age 82, some of showbiz's biggest names expressed their sadness over the loss.

Photos: The life and career of Dick Clark

Ryan Seacrest, who has long been Clark's heir apparent, having taken over the hosting duties on his "New Year's Rockin' Eve," said in a statement, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark. He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life. I idolized him from the start, and I was graced early on in my career with his generous advice and counsel. When I joined his show in 2006, it was a dream come true to work with him every New Year's Eve for the last 6 years. He was smart, charming, funny and always a true gentleman. I learned a great deal from him, and I'll always be indebted to him for his faith and support of me. He was a remarkable host and businessman and left a rich legacy to television audiences around the world. We will all miss him."

Carson Daly, who has also taken career cues from Clark, said in a statement: "We lost an icon today. I will always cherish the personal time we had together. I am forever indebted to Dick Clark and his legacy. My heart goes out to his family."

The love for Clark seems to defy genre, as his work on TV helped very diverse artists break into the mainstream. Russell Simmons tweeted, "Dick Clark was eternally young. No matter what culturally phenomenon was happening, he always embraced it. RIP..."

An MTV VP recalls his first job in television, working for the late Dick Clark.

Snoop Dogg added, "REST IN PEACE to the DICK CLARK!! U were pioneer n a good man!! Thank u sir."

Big Boi simply tweeted a photo of him and Outkast partner Andre 3000 standing alongside Clark, with the message "R.I.P Dick Clark."

Like Big Boi, "Weird Al" Yankovic also posted a photo of himself with the TV host, writing, "Such sad news. RIP Dick Clark."

Certainly his influence on merging music and television can be seen on TV today, especially on shows like "Glee." "A sad day as we have lost Dick Clark, an American Icon. You will be missed," one of the show's stars, Matthew Morrison, tweeted.

His loss is also felt by the pop world, with '80s boy banders New Kids on the Block tweeting, "#RIPDickClark. A true music maverick. You will be missed."

Their tourmates, the Backstreet Boys, added, ‏"Our hearts go out 2 Dick Clark's family. The memories u've created will live forever & r experiences w/ u is something we will cherish 4 all r lives."

Kings of Leon's Jared Followill seemed surprised by the news, writing, "R.I.P. Dick Clark? Say it ain't so..."

Madonna's manager Guy Oseary also tweeted about Clark's death. Back in the early '80s, just as Madge was taking her career to the next level, she famously declared on "Bandstand" that her ultimate goal was "to rule the world." Linking to a clip of that 1984 appearance, Oseary wrote, "Rest in Peace DIck Clark ..."

Share your condolences for Clark's family, friends and fans on our Facebook page.

Shiprack Package Tracker [Android App Review]

If you're used to getting loads of mail and you like to keep track of where it is as it's being delivered, Shiprack is definitely worthy of your consideration and time. Hot on the heels of Phil's review of Slice (okay, not really on the heels of), it's time to see if Shiprack is the less invasive alternative to Slice. (Hint: it is.)

Setting up Shiprack is an absolute breeze. Once you've got it all nice and installed, you have to set up what e-mail account Shiprack will be looking for emails from. Shiprack operates very similarly to Tripit; whenever you receive an email with a tracking number in it, you forward the email off to Shiprack, and they'll automatically start tracking it for you.

This is great (to me), because you can only track purchases that you want? tracked. Shiprack doesn't automatically search your entire inbox, so if there's anything that isn't really pressing, you can simply omit it. Shiprack also doesn't tally your total expenses on things, so there's that small element of ignorance that can keep your shopping and package-tracking guilt free!

Once you've got a package tracked, you'll be able to see all kinds of cool information, namely your item's tracking number and when it's estimated to be delivered. Shiprack seems to update in near-real time, so you'll have a detailed log of whenever your package hit a new checkpoint.

If you're interested, you can also see a map (on Google Maps, of course), detailing your item's journey, with colorful lines and goofy looking thumb tacks showing each new leg of its journey.

In the settings menu, you can add email aliases that you'd also like to forward tracking information from, so if you get lots of tracking numbers across lots of accounts, Shiprack has you covered. You can also mess with the typical fare like notification tones and vibration options, but something unique to Shiprack is the ability to set quiet times. It's not life-changing, but it's cool to see it there.

Finally, you can pick and choose what updates you'd like Shiprack to notify you of. I'm pretty crazy when it comes to my goods, so I want to see everything, but you've got full control over knowing if your stuff is ready to ship, in transit, or delayed, to name a few.

In the world of package trackers, I think Shiprack really nailed it. What it lacks in visual polish, it more than makes up for in functionality, plus, you've got the freedom to choose what gets tracked. That might not seem like a big deal to some, but in a world where our information is becoming increasingly public, every little bit I can keep my hands on, I like to do just that.

Shiprack is free and ad-supported, but if you'd like to simultaneously support the developer and? remove the ads, there's an in-app purchase of 99 cents. We've got download links after the break.

Microsoft updates Bing Translator for Windows Phone with offline features (video)

Image

Never again will Windows Phone owners worry about ordering raw beef in Spain without first knowing what'll arrive on their plate. That's because the crew at Microsoft have updated the Bing Translator app, which is available for free in the Marketplace. It now allows users to point their cameras at otherwise unintelligible text and then view a proper translation as an overlay on the photograph. As another nifty trick, Bing Translate allows users to speak phrases into their phone, which will then be audibly translated into a foreign language of choice. Most impressive, however, is the app's new offline capabilities, which can be enabled with the simple download of a language pack. Bing Translator supports English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Chinese Simplified, and if you'd like a peek into its functionality, just hop the break for the video.

Baseball's big hit may be wind, solar

14 hrs.

Move over steroids, Major League Baseball is getting more power the natural way.

Solar panels and wind turbines are popping up at ballparks across the country as part of a bid to make it easier for fans to embrace renewable energy on and off the field.

Most systems will provide between 30,000 and 40,000 kilowatt hours of electricity on an annual basis, enough to power the retail stores at Busch Stadium, for example, where the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals play.

The team noted that the 106 panels that were installed on a ticket booth and a concession canopy will amount to a ?modest? energy savings and should ?serve as an educational tool for renewable energy.?

Same goes for Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners, where a 168-solar panel system was installed this year that will feed about 40,000 kilowatt hours into the stadium?s grid. Monitors inside the ballpark allow fans to track the amount of power generated.

"By making fans aware of how solar energy generation, even in places like Seattle, can make a difference for any site, perhaps more people will consider adopting solar power for their own energy needs," Jim Doyle, president of Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company, which installed the system, said in a statement.

The Kansas City Royals, too, are showing off a shiny new solar array with the ability to produce approximately 36,000 kilowatt hours each year.

Solar panels are old news for Cleveland Indians fans. Progressive Field has had them since 2007. New this year is a prototype of a helix-shaped wind turbine designed by Cleveland State University professor Majid Rashidi.

The turbine will be installed for a year of testing, and is expected to generate 40,000 kilowatt hours. CNET has more details:

The wind turbine uses five off-the-shelf small wind turbines placed inside the grooves of the corkscrew. It's the helix shape, made of hard plastic, that boosts the power, Rashidi explained.

"Because you are creating an obstacle, you are directly funneling more wind into each turbine with the structure," he said.

While all this green energy tinkering at a ballpark near you might seem a tad gimmicky, consider this: baseball was the first sport to break the color barrier?and the first to broadcast live games on TV.?

Tips for refreshing your home with paint color | Pro Hands at Work

(ARA) ? For many people, the onset of spring and summer is the ideal time to take on a home improvement project. Paint is a popular choice for those looking to freshen up their space, given that it is an easy, economical activity and a fun way to make a dramatic difference.

In fact, painting tops spring home improvement wish lists, according to the 2012 Spring Home Improvement Survey by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). With seven of 10 homeowners planning home improvement projects, nearly half (49 percent) cite painting as the most-desired need. They say that bedrooms and bathrooms are the first targets for fresh paint (both at 29 percent), followed by living or family rooms (28 percent).

To help people jump start spring endeavors with low-cost project ideas and tips, NARI and Sherwin-Williams are launching National Painting Week on April 16. ?People are looking for more cost-saving ways to enhance their spaces,? says NARI chairman Paul Zuch, certified remodeler. ?Some of the most dramatic transformations are projects like resurfacing cabinets or changing kitchen or bathroom hardware, as well as painting the interior or exterior of your home.?

With today?s technologies at your fingertips, determining the right paint color is easy and anyone can be their own interior decorator.

* Choose colors like a pro using coordinated color collections. ?It?s easy to achieve designer looks in your own home with HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams,? says David Bromstad, HGTV designer. ?Each of the collections represents a style to match your own, and features colors that work together in any combination. The wallpaper coordinates with the colors and the exterior color collections highlight your home?s architecture to achieve a harmonious look room to room, inside and out.?

* See your finished look without picking up a brush with Sherwin-Williams? color visualizer, where you can digitally repaint your space, or get inspired with Chip It! (www.letschipit.com), which instantly turns any online image into a color palette using more than 1,500 colors. With the mobile ColorSnap app, you can turn anything that inspires you into paint colors. Capture an image with your smartphone and you will be able to see the paint color and two complementary colors.

* Liven up your living area by revamping the bedroom, giving new life to an old piece of furniture or staining the deck.

* Define your style. Make a statement combining bolder paint colors with their neutral counterparts.

* Use high-quality materials. Spending a little more at the outset saves money in the long run.

Republic Wireless opening up reservation system next week in advance of summer beta program

Image
We've already known that Republic Wireless was planning to reopen the beta program for its hybrid WiFi / cellular service this summer, and the company has now finally detailed exactly how that beta will take place. For starters, it'll only be open to those who have already signed up to the company's email list or tried to place an order when that option was available last November, but that's still not a guarantee to get in. Starting next week, those folks will receive an email with details on how to take part in the company's online reservation system, after which you'll then have a week to claim a spot in one of the beta waves that will be rolling out over the course of the summer. Still no word on that new handset that was also promised for April, but you can find all the details on the beta program at the link below.

[Thanks, Andy]

Rihanna Ends Interview After Love-Life Questions

Pop star halts Australian interview when she's asked about her personal life.
By Kara Warner

If there's one thing to admire about Rihanna, it's the way she speaks her mind on sensitive issues. But during a recent interview with a reporter from the Australian talk show "Sunrise," RiRi apparently didn't appreciate the line of questioning and abruptly ended their chat.

Because Rihanna was in Australia to promote her upcoming movie "Battleship," the conversation began with a discussion about her future in films and whether she'll put her singing career on the back burner in favor of film. "I don't see why I can't do both," she said. "If I love both, then I'll do great at both. I love music, and after my first experience with movies, I can't wait to do more."

One of those potential future films is tackling the coveted role of the late great Whitney Houston in an upcoming biopic, which Rihanna said would be a very emotional experience. "She's been someone that I've looked up to for so long," she said. "Her music is something that I've been very close to, so I guess it would be fulfilling as well as ... a lot of pressure."

At this point in the interview the reporter brought up Rihanna's public persona and the pressures and frustrations associated with having all your day-to-day activities reported in the news — specifically when tabloids and gossip websites speculate about Rihanna's love life and link her to other celebs, like Ashton Kutcher.

"[It's] very frustrating," Rihanna said, looking annoyed. "Almost as frustrating as being asked about it."

"Yeah, you don't like going there?" the reporter asked in a diplomatic way.

"I mean, what's the point?" Rihanna responded.

"Well people are interested in you, you're a big star," the reporter added.

"They are. And they're interested in a lot of things — a lot of things that don't matter," said a visibly irritated Rihanna. "Or shouldn't."

The reporter added in voice-over at the end of the piece that the interview abruptly ended after Rihanna's last comment.

This isn't the first time the topic of Rihanna's love life has halted an interview. Last month in London, Rihanna chastised a reporter at a press conference for bringing up the Ashton rumors. "Wow, how disappointing was that question?" she asked in response. "I'm happy and I'm single, if that's what you're really asking."

What do you think about Rihanna's reaction to the personal line of questioning? Let us know in the comments!
