CLERMONT, Fla. -- A sinkhole caused a section of a central Florida resort villa to partially collapse early Monday, while another section of the villa was sinking, authorities said.
About 30 percent of the three-story structure collapsed around 3 a.m. Monday, Lake County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Tony Cuellar said. The villa at the Summer Bay Resort had already been evacuated and no injuries were reported. Cuellar said authorities were also concerned about another section of the villa, which was sinking.
The sinkhole comes five months after one elsewhere in Florida killed a man.
Monday's sinkhole, which is in the middle of the villa, is about 40 to 50 feet in diameter, Cuellar said. He said authorities think it was getting deeper but couldn't tell early Monday if it was growing outward.
The villa houses 24 units and about 20 people were staying in it at the time, Cuellar said.
Authorities were called to the scene, about 10 miles west of Disney World, late Sunday where they found that the building was making popping sounds and windows were breaking.
A
nearby villa was also evacuated as a precaution, Cuellar said.Cuellar said there was a gas leak but the gas has since been shut off.
Witnesses told The Associated Press they could hear a cracking sound as the villa began sinking. A large crack was visible at the building's base.
Luis Perez, who was staying at a villa near the sinking one, said he was in his room when the lights went off around 11:30 p.m. He said he was on his way to the front desk to report the outage when he saw firefighters and police outside.
"I started walking toward where they were at and you could see the building leaning and you could see a big crack at the base of the building," said Perez, 54, of Berona, N.J.
Summer Bay is described on its website as a luxury resort with condominiums, two-bedroom villas and vacation houses in addition to standard rooms. The site touts a clubhouse, atrium and poolside bar, and says the resort is on a secluded 64-acre lake.
Florida has a long, ongoing problem with sinkholes, which cause millions of dollars in damage in the state annually. On March 1, a sinkhole underneath a house in Seffner, about 60 miles southwest of the Summer Bay Resort, swallowed a man who was in his bed. His body was never recovered.
But such fatalities and injuries are rare, and most sinkholes are small. Sinkholes can develop quickly or slowly over time.
They are caused by Florida's geology -- the state sits on limestone, a porous rock that easily dissolves in water, with a layer of clay on top. The clay is thicker in some locations making them even more prone to sinkholes.
Other states sit atop limestone in a similar way, but Florida has additional factors like extreme weather, development, aquifer pumping and construction.

What is it about Miami that serial killers find so attractive? The climate? Easy targets? Incompetent police? Sympathetic therapists? Tolerant sugar daddies? Or like-minded companions?
Dexter Morgan sure hasn't had trouble finding folks who share his hobby, but they usually wind up in plastic at the bottom of the ocean. Not so with Hannah and Zack, however, who went 2-0 on "Dexter" against everyone's favorite serial killer in Sunday's "Dress Code."
The black widow strikes again
Hannah McKay is more Texas than Florida: Don't mess with her. Wrong this woman, and your best-case scenario is waking up on the sketchy side of town with a nasty poison hangover. Dexter got off lucky ? and a good thing too, because Hannah needed his help when she dispatched another husband. Of course, it was self-defense ? which is how she usually justifies her murders.?
Showtime
Mr. Moneybags, you're standing in the way of true love. Get lost!
Although Miles Moneybags did help her trade her orange jumpsuit for designer duds, his abuse and threats of exposure just made Hannah another kind of prisoner. A wanted fugitive parading around the very city where she was arrested for murder was harder to swallow than rat poison, but it's sweet to see Dex reunited with his ladylove. It's a shame Deb doesn't share our delight. Killing your boyfriend and attempting to murder you is just ancient history. Get over it, girl.
Neighborhood watch
Cassie's murder is the second this year at Dexter's apartment building, which would sound alarm bells for any other detectives than the clowns at Miami Metro. That said, things could get interesting if Quinn IDs her killer as Zack, who was probably enraged because his mentor stood him up again. We don't blame Dexter's prot?g? for being frustrated. Cassie was such a useless redshirt character, she had less depth than a victim on "Murder, She Wrote."
Showtime
No, Grasshopper, you must be patient!
'Breastaurant' business
Oh, the irony. Masuka's daughter, Niki, works as a topless waitress in a sports bar, and she has no qualms ta-talking to him in her "uniform." (Masuka's mortification is no match for viewers who remember Madison Burge playing a high schooler on "Friday Night Lights.") He finagles a part-time gig for her at Miami Metro, which ? knowing the track record of Masuka's previous interns ? cannot possibly end well.?
Showtime
Nepotism is at work at Miami Metro, even if the detectives' brains aren't.

Motorola and Google working on a new Nexus device: Rumours
Quick on the heels of the news that Asus might be manufacturing the newest iteration of Google?s Nexus 10 tablets, there?s a rumour that Motorola too will be producing a Nexus device, which will be revealed in Q4 of this year.
A Google+ post by Taylor Wimberly, serial Moto X leaker, has revealed that Motorola and Google are planning to put their heads together to release a new Nexus device. He?s specified that this device will not be the Moto X.
A new Nexus device by Motorola?
?
The device could well be a smartphone and not a tablet, since the new Nexus 7 is already hitting stores and rumours are that the new Nexus 10 will be built by Asus. Essentially, Google will be working on a new Nexus device by itself, considering it now owns Motorola Mobility. The best part about this news is the fact that it?s being rumoured that this Nexus device will not be a rehash of the Moto X. So, if you were worried that the new Nexus device could be a slightly modified Moto X running stock Android, that may not be happening.
?
The Nexus smartphone division has seen manufacturers like HTC, Samsung and even LG produce phones for Google. It is also being said that LG might end up producing another Nexus device for Google. It wouldn?t be out of the question to see the Internet giant release two Nexus devices this year alone.
Meanwhile, news has emerged that Asus, and not Samsung, will be the driving force behind Google?s Nexus 10 tablets. A leaked listing by Best Buy too has gone on to show that the winning combination of Google and Asus that produced both versions of the successful Nexus 7 tablets could be working on the larger, 10-inch Nexus 10 too.?

Pilot in deadly wreck survived earlier crash
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? The plane accident that killed four people in a Connecticut neighborhood was not the first crash for the pilot, a former Microsoft executive who was taking his teenage son on a tour of East Coast colleges.
The pilot, Bill Henningsgaard, was killed along with his son, Maxwell, and two children who were in a house struck by the small propeller-driven plane on Friday. Four bodies were recovered from the wreckage and sent to the Connecticut medical examiner's office for identification.
East Haven police on Saturday released the names of the crash victims, including Henningsgaard, 54, of Medina, Wash.; his 17-year-old son; 13-year-old Sade Brantley and 1-year-old Madisyn Mitchell, who lived in the East Haven home hit by the plane.
National Transportation Safety Board investigator Patrick Murray said Saturday the plane was upside down when it struck a house at about a 60 degree angle. He said the pilot was making his first approach to the airport and did not declare an emergency before the crash.
After removing the wreckage and before analyzing any data, he said at a news conference in New Haven, "We don't have any indication there was anything wrong with the plane."
A preliminary NTSB report on the crash is expected within 10 business days. A more in-depth report could take up to nine months.
Henningsgaard, a highly regarded philanthropist, was flying a small plane to Seattle in 2009 with his mother when the engine quit. He crash-landed on Washington's Columbia River.
"I forced myself to confront that fact that the situation any pilot fears ? a mid-air emergency, was happening right then, with my mother in the plane," he wrote in a blog post days later.
In the Connecticut crash, Henningsgaard was bringing the 10-seater plane, a Rockwell International Turbo Commander 690B, in for a landing at Tweed New Haven Airport in rainy weather just before noon when the plane struck two small homes, engulfing them in flames. The aircraft's left wing lodged in one house and its right wing in the other.
As the children's mother yelled for help from the front lawn, several people in the working-class neighborhood raced to rescue the children, but they were forced to turn back by the fire.
A neighbor, David Esposito, was among those who raced to help the children's mother. He said he ran into the upstairs of the house, where the woman believed her children were, but he couldn't find them after frantically searching a crib and closets. He returned downstairs to search some more, but he dragged the woman out when the flames became too strong.
The pilot's family had learned it was Bill Henningsgaard's plane through the tail number, said his brother, Blair Henninsgaard, the city attorney in Astoria, Ore.
In 2009, Bill Henningsgaard was flying from Astoria, Ore. with his 84-year-old mother to watch his daughter in a high school play when he crashed into the river as he tried to glide back to the airport. He and his mother, a former Astoria mayor, climbed out on a wing and were rescued.
Henningsgaard was a member of Seattle-based Social Venture Partners, a foundation that helps build up communities. The foundation extended its condolences to his wife and two daughters.
"There are hundreds of people that have a story about Bill ? when he went the extra mile, when he knew just the right thing to say, how he would never give up. He was truly all-in for this community, heart, mind and soul," the foundation wrote Friday in a post on its website.
Paul Shoemaker of Social Venture Partners told the Seattle Times that Henningsgaard was "an incredibly good, real, honest man, for the community, for his family, for this world."
"The guy has already done so much for the world. And he was going to do so much more," he said.
Henningsgaard spent 14 years at Microsoft in various marketing and sales positions, according to his biography on Social Venture Partners website. He was a longtime board member at Youth Eastside Services, a Bellevue, Wash.-based agency that provides counseling and substance-abuse treatment, and led the organization's $10.7 million fundraising campaign for its new headquarters, which opened in 2008.
A vigil for the victims of the crash was planned for Saturday night in an East Haven park.

A Southern California Nursery Tour
Source: thebenjamin.wordpress.com --- Saturday, August 10, 2013
I spent a large portion of this week touring nurseries in the San Diego area and talking to growers. I saw many production systems, heard stories of innovation and entrepreneurship, and added to my understanding of the California ornamental plant industry. I won?t bore you with all the details. Instead of talking about the things that I learned about the industry I?ll focus on some of the other things I gleaned from this trip. I saw some great old trucks. The mild climate helps vehicles age gracefully with little care. I was reminded numerous times while walking through production fields that it was ?snake season.? I did not see one snake. But lizards were plentiful. The largest lizards were very elusive; I only saw the blur as they disappeared. I suspect this paranoia is what allows big lizards to reach their full size before becoming lunch. The only lizards I could photograph were similar to the SLO lizards. By the time this trip wrapped up I was seriously considering bringing my beard back. Or dying some gray into my hair. Or wearing glasses. Or wearing the customized shirt on the right. I say this in a joking fashion, but there is a grain of truth here. Age provides some credibility in research and industry. In addition to looking young I guess I must also look or sound trustworthy. Several growers told me secrets?things that are secret for good reason, admitting them could result in legal trouble. These confessions were very ...

?Mother F***er Racist Sons of B**ches From Hell?: Wedding Venue Gets Threats, Fears Shut Down After Refusing Gay Couple?s Nuptials
Another business is facing retribution for declining service to a same-sex couple. Betty and Dick Odgaard, owners of G?rtz Haus Gallery in Grimes, Iowa, are catching the ire of gay rights advocates after they declined offering their venue to Lee Stafford and his fiance Jared.
Now the owners, who are Christians, are receiving vicious and threatening emails and phone calls ? and they fear that their business could shut down because of the fierce reaction.
It was less than one week ago that the Lee and Jared entered G?rtz Haus looking for additional information about holding their wedding there. After Dick realized that it would be a gay ceremony, he told the couple that they would not be able to hold their nuptials at the establishment ? and that?s when the controversy erupted.
?It started with emails and we noticed the emails were from a person with a name that looked like a man?s name. We?re a little suspicious about it and ? two fellows walked in and that?s where it all began,? Dick told TheBlaze on Friday. ?It was obvious what the situation was. I had to confirm it. I asked if this was a gay marriage celebration and I said we can?t take your money for this.?
From there, news spread that the Odgaards turned the couple away. Before long, phone calls and emails came streaming in. Betty said that some people have promised that the furor won?t stop until the business, which is a bistro, flower shop and a wedding destination, shuts down. Detractors have called Betty and Dick ?haters.?
?I wish all people well. I have love for all people,? Betty, who was visibly distraught on the phone, told TheBlaze.
The family shared some of the e-mail responses they?ve received with TheBlaze. And the contents weren?t pretty.
One angry e-mail said that the family is ?finished? and ?doomed.? ?You are mean, rude, selfish, mother f***er racist sons of b**ches from hell,? it read, with the writer later adding, ?F**k you, f**k your God, f**k your religion.? Another person who goes by the name ?Micky? wrote, ?Betty, you?re very old and almost dead.? How do you both feel, knowing that America, and the world, will be a better place without you??
Further, someone claiming to be with the Westboro Baptist Church, a virulent anti-gay group, wrote to the owners claiming that members would soon be in the area to support the business. In sum, Betty and Dick report getting between 50 and 60 emails and about 20 to 30 phone calls per day about the incident, although a majority of these are actually positive. But while verbal support has been great, there hasn?t been an influx of people coming in, the couple said.
On the legal side of things, Lee and Jared, who believe they were unfairly discriminated against, have apparently filed a complaint with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. Betty and Dick have consulted with their lawyer, who believes that they are within their religious rights to decline the wedding. On the flip side, Lee and Jared claim that the law is on their side.
Iowa law does prohibit service refusals based on sexual orientation, but religious sentiment often makes these scenarios more complicated.
The business has already experienced the impact of its decision. Betty said that two weddings are canceled for next summer and that some people want their down payments back. Additionally, an artist has pulled out from working with G?rtz Haus Gallery.
?We will lose considerable money ? it will impact us though, no doubt,? she told TheBlaze.
As far as their reasoning for the refusal, the couple is candid and wants to ensure that people understand their views on the matter ? reasoning that they feel has not been adequately conveyed through media coverage. Betty called it ?totally a faith-based issue? that is rooted in the family?s Christian religious convictions.
?We believe a marriage is between a man and woman,? she said, with Dick adding, ?To us, it?s a sacrament.?
The couple noted that they have business associates, former staff members and friends who are gay and that they have nothing against them. There is no hate, they claim, as media and activists have charged. They simply disagree with the lifestyle, but respect the personal decisions that people make.
?I would serve them in every other way ? we simply don?t want to take part ? it just comes down to that final line of taking their vows in our facility,? the wife added, noting that she would have gladly provided flowers or cake (something more detached from the actual nuptials). ?I do not hate these people and they have the right to do what they want to do under the law and in humanity.?
If the law requires the couple to comply and marry gay couples, they said that they will stay true to their convictions and will simply stop performing ceremonies at the location all together.
The future, considering the threatening e-mails and calls and the outrage, is uncertain. Betty said she?s looking for advice and guidance on how she can keep the business open.
?We don?t want to shut our doors. But financially it could shut it down,? she said. ?We?ve never had anything like this happen.?
Betty and Dick aren?t alone. Other businesses have faced similar problems in the past, which TheBlaze has covered extensively.

Apple Wins Appeal with ITC Reinstating Case against Motorola
Published on 08-07-2013 08:33 PM
The U.S. court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled in favor of Apple recently, reinstating the company?s complaint against Google-owned Motorola Mobility. The ruling overturns a decision from the U.S. International Trade Commission from March 2012, when the commission dismissed Apple?s complaint against Motorola. Apple appealed the ruling and with the recent decision, the case will proceed as reported by Florian Mueller.
Apple?s original case involved three patents. The appeals court reprimanded the ITC, and reversed its decision on two of the original patents in question, including U.S. Patent No. 7,663,607: "Multipoint touchscreen" and U.S. Patent No. 7,812,828: "Ellipse fitting for multi-touch surfaces.? According to Mueller:
Today's remand decision gives Apple another opportunity to win a U.S. import ban against the Google subsidiary's Android-based devices, which would have the Android ecosystem at large concerned. The appeal granted in Apple?s favor does however officially remove one of the original three patents from the case: U.S. Patent No. 5,379,430, entitled "Object-oriented system locator system." Apple ended up not pursuing its claims on this patent in its appeal. For those of you who didn?t already know, Apple first filed the ITC complaint in October 2010 in response to a Motorola patent attack, alleging that the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X and other smartphones infringed on existing multitouch patents. The subsequent investigation concluded in January when an ALJ found that Motorola were not in violation of the asserted Apple patents.
We?ll have to see what decision the case will lead to and how it will affect the two companies.

Study: Coal-fire energy plants largest source of toxic water in NC

CHARLOTTE ? A new study released by environmental groups claims coal-fired power plants in North Carolina and across the country are now the largest source of toxic water pollution.
The report contends many coal plants -- which release coal ash into lakes and rivers ? have insufficient oversight and permits, affecting fish and other wildlife.
But Duke Energy officials strongly disagree with the study and stand by their treatment and water inspections.
On the banks of Mountain Island lake Tuesday, some of the nation's top environmental watchdogs didn't hold back.
Robert Kennedy Jr. of the Waterkeeper Alliance and others highlighted a new environmental report.
"This is a crime and environmental crime is real crime,? said Kennedy.
It contends 274 coal-fire power plants in the United States -- including the Riverbend Steam Plant in Gaston County -- discharged coal ash into waterways, making coal-fired power plants the nation's largest overall water polluter.
"In fact, it's so much, it's more than the next nine industries combined, those are things like chemical plants, refineries and paper mills,? said Mary Anne Hitt of the Sierra Club.
This group is pushing for the passage of a federal Environmental Protection Agency proposal. It would create stronger and more binding federal standards to limit toxic chemicals going from coal plants into lakes and rivers.
"This is a problem you can fix, we think the treatment technologies are at hand, we can put this behind us,? said Eric Schaeffer of the Environmental Integrity Project.
Officials at Duke Energy, which operates Riverbend Steam Station -- slammed the report saying it's filled with inaccuracies, especially about Riverbend.
"It's important for the public not to be misled by this kind of information,? said Duke Energy spokeswoman Erin Culbert. "Duke Energy has been sampling water quality there since the 1950s. We continue to find the water quality is a very high quality, fish have not been affected at all, and are very safe."
Culbert adds that Duke Energy is retiring Riverbend Station, ensuring that half of North Carolina's 14 coal-fired power plants will no longer be in service by year's end.
"We really have a long track of protecting water quality and being good stewards of these sites,? she said.

Calif. court declines to stop gay marriages
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The California Supreme Court is refusing to order the state to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
The court issued an order Monday denying the request by backers of the state's same-sex marriage ban for an emergency order that would have required the state to keep enforcing a voter-approved prohibition on same-sex marriages.
The U.S. Supreme Court last month cleared the way for gay marriages to resume in the nation's most populous state by dismissing the backer's appeal of a lower court ruling that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional.
The state's highest court still plans to separately consider whether that lower court ruling effectively legalized gay marriages statewide or only in Los Angeles and Alameda counties.
The two couples who sued to strike down the ban live in those counties.

At least eight people killed in ethnic clashes in Guinea
CONAKRY (Reuters) - At least eight people have been killed in ethnic violence in southeastern Guinea which entered a second day on Tuesday, witnesses said, underscoring tensions in the West African nation ahead of parliamentary elections.
In Nzerekore, Guinea's second largest town, ethnic gangs prowled the streets and witnesses reported shooting. The violence erupted on Monday after a man accused of being a thief was killed in the nearby town of Koule, residents said.
"Everything is closed: the market, banks, shops. People have stayed at home," said Ousmane Balde, a resident of Nzerekore, which lies some 980 km (612 miles) from the capital Conakry.
A second source, who asked not to be identified, said he had seen at least eight dead at the city's hospital. Most of them were killed with machetes and one appeared to have been burned alive, the source said.
Alpha Saliou Diallo, a local radio journalist, said hospital sources were citing at least 11 dead and 50 people injured.
It was not possible to reach the hospital by telephone.
After months of deadlock and deadly clashes, often ethnically-driven, Guinea's political leaders have agreed to hold a long-overdue parliamentary election on September 24.
The poll is meant to be the final step in the return to civilian rule in the mineral-rich nation after a 2008 coup.
President Alpha Conde won a 2010 presidential election but his rivals accuse him of trying to rig the planned legislative vote. Conde draws support from Guinea's second-largest ethnic group, the Malinke, while the opposition is backed by the Peul, who account for around 40 percent of the population.
Mining firms have signed multi-billion dollar deals in a bid to secure untapped mineral riches, especially iron ore, but political instability has led to some investment being frozen.
The region hit by the clashes is near Guinea's porous border with Liberia, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone, all nations that are in the process of recovering from conflicts of their own.

Crash Davis matches Reggie
Wrapping up the final series of the first half, Orioles first baseman Chris Davis homered in his fourth consecutive game as the Orioles defeated the Blue Jays 7-4. The homer, a two-run shot in the third inning against Josh Johnson, was his 37th of the season, tying Reggie Jackson?s American League record for first-half home runs. In the interest of fairness (first halves vary in length based on scheduling), D.J. Short astutely pointed out on Twitter that Davis entered a tie with Hank Greenberg and Luis Gonzalez for home runs through 95 games.
For those keeping score at home, Davis is now more than halfway to Barry Bonds? single-season home run record of 73 and 24 home runs away from tying Roger Maris at 61 home runs, which some ? including Davis himself ? consider to be the legitimate single-season record.

Brian Vickers a surprise winner at New Hampshire
LOUDON, N.H. (AP) ? Stuck in a hospital bed, Brian Vickers wanted to live another day.
Once he recovered, he hungered for a competitive ride.
And once he landed a solid seat, well, Vickers simply had to win.
Even when life tossed obstacles in Vickers' path, his determined spirit never waned. After four years of health scares and unemployment put his promising career in doubt, Vickers kept pushing toward the finish line. He got there Sunday as the surprise winner at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
"Coming here and sitting in Victory Lane, just makes it one of the most special events in my life," Vickers said.
He had plenty of drivers in the series pulling for this comeback.
One by one, they saluted Vickers with a wave from the car or a back slap on the way to Victory Lane.
Close friend Jimmie Johnson, a five-time Cup champion, pumped his fist out the window in pure happiness as if he'd won a sixth title.
Vickers did all he could to savor the unforgettable scene.
"When you have so much love and support around you," Vickers said, "it makes all the difference in the world."
Vickers even tried to celebrate with the fans, though the New Hampshire gates wouldn't open to the grandstands. That's OK. He had a pretty big mob waiting for him ? even his fiancee, who had left the track to catch a ride home, only to reverse course and make it back just in time to greet him.
About the only key cog missing was owner Michael Waltrip. Waltrip and co-owner Rob Kauffman were in Europe this weekend for the 20th annual Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.
London, Loudon. Off by a letter.
Vickers drives a part-time schedule for Michael Waltrip Racing and shares the No. 55 Toyota with Waltrip and Mark Martin. His win made him the No. 1 contender for a full-time ride at MWR in 2014.
"Wins help a lot of business issues. So this was a great day for that," MWR general manager Ty Norris said. "He's been our focus. We would love to have him in that car."
Vickers snapped a 75-race winless streak and hadn't won since the August 2009 race at Michigan. He won his first career Cup race in August 2006 at Talladega Superspeedway.
Vickers made the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship in 2009, only to be sidelined most of the next season with blood clots. He had two procedures to close a hole in his heart and insert a stent into a vein in his left leg.
After Red Bull Racing shut down after the 2011 season, Vickers hooked on with a limited ride with MWR. He has been driving full-time this season in the Nationwide Series for Joe Gibbs Racing.
With his first checkered flag since his return, he is done looking back.
"That's why I came back," he said. "For what's to be, not what's happened."
Kyle Busch was second and Jeff Burton third. Pole winner Brad Keselowski was fourth and Aric Almirola fifth.
Jimmie Johnson brushed off his 43rd-place start to finish sixth. Tony Stewart was running inside the top 10 at the final caution until he ran out of fuel and plummeted to 26th.
"It's hard to calculate how much we are saving on the cautions," Stewart said. "We thought we were about three-quarters of a lap to the good before that last caution. Obviously, we didn't save as much as I thought we would."
Busch and Vickers finished 1-2 in Saturday's Nationwide Series race. Both drivers had to stretch their fuel, and Vickers ran out just as he crossed the finish line.
He was in a similar spot again down the stretch a race later. He had just enough to zip past Stewart with 13 laps left and then pull away in the green-white-checkered finish. He didn't run out until it was time for the celebratory burnout.
Stewart wasn't so lucky a week after he finished second at Daytona.
Johnson, who won at Daytona, was mired in last place for the first time in his career after his No. 48 Chevrolet flunked post-qualifying inspection. No big deal. The points leader made quick work through the back of the field and worked his way up to the front for most of the race.
He easily breezed past 71-year-old Morgan Shepherd, the oldest driver to start a race in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series.
Kurt Busch led a race-high 102 laps before he connected with Ryan Newman to end his shot at his first victory of the season. Off the restart, Danica Patrick was involved in a three-car wreck that included boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
"We're all bunched up on those restarts," Patrick said. "I'm not sure if I misjudged the breaking zone or they stopped really quick in front of me."
Vickers survived it all to win for the third time in 271 Sprint Cup races.
He thanked the MWR team for "believing in me and giving me a second chance."
But he wants more.
He received the clean bill of health, the ride and the victory.
With a full 36-race schedule, Vickers said there is one more check he needs to put in his box.
"I feel like I can win a championship with this team," he said. "That's our goal."

In Move to University of California, Napolitano Trades One Challenging Bureaucracy for Another
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano bid goodbye to Washington?Friday, fleeing the federal government gridlock to become president of the University of California. But running one of the world?s leading public research university systems may not feel so far removed from the dysfunction she?s leaving behind.
Public research universities across the country are in crisis. Dwindling government funds and rising costs have left states scrambling to maintain quality, while finding ways to increase revenue and cut budgets. Despite prestigious schools like UCLA and Berkley, the UC system is among the most affected. With a $24 billion budget spread across 10 campuses, more than 220,000 students and 191,000 faculty and staff, it is one of the largest state systems and one of the most expensive to run. Finding more money will be the new president?s priority.
(MORE: Napolitano Leaves Office With Her Border Security Efforts Incomplete)
Napolitano, the first woman to lead the University of California, will have several options for fixing its fiscal problems. She can ask the state ? which already contributes 11% of the system?s budget ? for more money, hike tuition, cut costs, or raise more money from philanthropists and alumni. Getting further state funds will prove challenging, if not impossible. California?s budget is in dire shape and taxpayers already chipped in through a November ballot initiative that helped the system avoid $1 billion in cuts. But that is far from enough ?to keep the university afloat,? says Robert Powell, a chemical engineering professor at UC Davis and a faculty representative to the University of California Board of Regents.
Meanwhile new initiatives meant to strengthen the system have met with resistance. A recent push from the Board of Regents to offer online courses for credit to raise tuition from students outside the university system was opposed by some faculty who believed it would weaken the university?s brand. It has failed to recruit a high number of paying students. And in 2009, during another budget crisis, UC Irvine launched a law school even though the system already had four. ?I?ve never heard anyone say there are not enough lawyers in California,? said Pat Callan, the President of the Higher Education Policy Institute who has worked in higher education in the state.
Relying on students to shoulder the costs may not be an option. The decline in state funding has already forced students to take on a larger share of their education costs. In 1990, according to the university?s website, the state funded 78% of the cost of education per UC student. Now that figure stands at 39%.?Raising tuition, which is about $13,000 for California students and around $36,000 for those from out of state, would be deeply unpopular. Outgoing president Mark Yudof has raised tuition several times, nearly doubling it since he took the job in 2008.
(MORE: Napolitano: A Safe Pair of Hands for Homeland?Security)
If the balance sheet weren?t daunting enough, Napolitano, a lawyer without an academic background, will also arrive at the job as an outsider, which could cause friction among tradition-minded faculty and administrators. But her experience as the governor of Arizona and the leader of a major federal agency will help her face the budgetary and bureaucratic challenges facing the president of any major university system, says Mitch Daniels, the former governor of Indiana who now runs Purdue University.
Those problems, Daniels says, are ?more familiar for someone who has been dealing with financial problems regularly in business or elected office as she and I did.? He says the increase in the number of former governors appointed to lead universities is ?not an accident?Money was easy in higher education for a long time. Financial stewardship was not as important as keeping everybody happy and [they didn?t] have to make difficult choices among disciplines or competing priorities on the campus. Governors do that all the time.?
