iTunes Match: Revolutionary? (The Week)

New York ? Apple rolls out the beta version of its new cloud-based music service ? and delights fans with how easy it is to access iTunes on the go

The surprises?just keep coming from Apple. On Monday, the company released the beta version of iTunes Match, a cloud-based music service that allows subscribers to sync their entire iTunes music libraries to iCloud for $24.99 a year. Users will be able to access their music from iPhones, iPads, and up to eight other devices. The shocker, however, is that iTunes Match will also support streaming.... sort of. Details remain vague about how exactly Match works, and an Apple spokesperson takes issue with the word "streaming." But, as Eric Slivka at Mac Rumors says, Apple's complaint is semantic ? iTunes Match essentially does stream music. How revolutionary is this?

Portable music listening will never be the same: This will be a welcome money-saver for iPhone-owning music lovers, says Jared Newman at TIME. Music gobbles up most of their iPhones' storage space, making streaming from the cloud a godsend. "Instead of getting a phone with more storage at a cost of $100, users can spend $25 per year on iTunes Match instead."
"Full iPhone? New iTunes 'Match' will stream your music tracks"

This puts Apple on top for good: "There's now little question that iTunes in the cloud is superior," says MG Siegler at Tech Crunch. Streaming gives Match the advantage over cloud services from Google and Amazon. Plus those services lack the added bonus of having iTunes attached for more music purchasing. Offering both cloud downloading and cloud streaming, iTunes Match "overdelivers" on its already stellar promise.
"With iTunes in the cloud, Apple underpromises and overdelivers"

Wait. Are we celebrating theft??"It's kind of shocking that record companies agreed to this," says Jason O. Gilbert at The Huffington Post. After all, iTunes Match essentially encourages illegal downloading. This cloud service provides a loophole that would allow users to illegally download a song, search for it on iTunes using iTunes Match, and then listen to the legal version of the song anywhere using the iCloud. "So good news for pirates."

PBT: Artest reportedly on 'Dancing with the Stars'

Ron Artest is following in Mark Cuban?s footsteps. Literally.

It had been rumored that Ron Artest was in talks to take part in Dancing with the Stars this fall (although he seemed down on it), and now Terez Owens is reporting that the Lakers forward ? to officially become Metta World Peace by the time the show airs ? will be announced as one of the participants Monday.

My source close to Ron Ron has confirmed that Artest is one of the participants on the 13th season of DWTS. The complete cast will be announced tomorrow during ABC?s ?The Bachelor Pad?Artest will be dancing into our hearts and home starting Monday, September 19th.

No active NBA player has ever been on the show because the show runs during the NBA season (Mark Cuban has done it but lasted only a couple weeks). With the lockout expected to cost the season games, Artest is in ? although there is a risk for the show if Artest lasts a while and David Stern and Billy Hunter figure it all out. Former athletes have fared well on the show ? Emmitt Smith, Helio Castroneves and Hines Ward have all won (as have Kristi Yamaguchi?and Shawn Johnson).

There also have been rumors Dwyane Wade would participate, but there is no confirmation of that yet.

Luis J. Rodriguez: Why We Need a Deeper Dialogue on Black-and-Brown Relations

Recently, African American comedian Katt Williams went on a xenophobic anti-Mexican rant during a comedy show on August 27th in Phoenix, Arizona, apparently in response to a heckler. In comedy it's painfully hard dealing with audience barbs and catcalls (no pun intended), although everyone knows this is part of the life and any comedian worth their salt generally address such attacks with their most powerful weapon--humor.

Yet we get those instances when a comedian loses it. Here is some of what Katt Williams said during his tirade:

"... it appears to me, y'all like it over here a lot... If y'all had California and you loved it, then you shouldn't have given that mothaf*cka up. You should have fought for California, goddamnit, since you love it... Are you Mexican? Do you know where Mexico is? No this ain't Mexico, it used to be Mexico, motherf*cker, and now it's Phoenix, goddammit. USA! USA!... No n*gga, do you know where you at? USA! USA!... No n*gga, this is my hood... [security comes] F*ck him! Mothaf*ckas think they can live in this country and pledge allegiance to another country... Do you remember when white people used to say go back to Africa? And we'd have to tell them we don't want to? So if you love Mexico, bitch, get the f*ck over there! [breaks into the National Anthem]... We were slaves bitch, you just all work like that at the landscapers..."

There was more, but I'm sure you get the idea. I apologize to anyone offended by seeing this, but I have to contribute my two centavos on this matter (and the way our economy is going, two centavos may soon be worth more than two cents). Now, I don't mean to fuel any animosity between African Americans and Mexicans, whites and anyone else. God knows there are enough attacks against one another for superficial and ridiculous reasons (and attacking anyone for their so-called race or ethnicity is silly). What we often forget is that idiots come in all colors--if I have any prejudice it's against people who don't know what they're talking about, who don't know their own history, let alone that of others.

So instead of going off myself, I'm going to make this a "teaching moment" (I know, this is dumb clich?, but you get the point). Why react in kind to Mr. Williams in an already negative environment; this issue is bigger than one bad night at the comedy club (a small message to Mr. Williams: There is always going to be bad nights at the club, get over it).

Mexicans did fight for California. In fact, the one major battle they had with Anglo forces invading California they won, with horses and lances, just outside of Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the decision to turn the state over to the United States was made in Washington D.C. without the input of the people involved.

In fact, there was a whole war that Mexicans fought to stop the illegal invasion, which, lest Mr. Williams forget, was being pushed by the slave-owning interests in the United States. It was Southern slaveholders who ignited the war to rip Texas away from Mexico when Anglos refused to accept Mexico's laws against slavery.

Mexico had abolished slavery in the early 1800s, way before the Emancipation Proclamation; Mexico even had at least two African-Mexicans as presidents some two hundreds years before Barack Obama was elected president in this country.

The main catalyst for the Mexican war was the refusal of Mexico to return black slaves--believed to be more than 10,000--who had taken the southern-route of the "underground railroad," crossing the border to a free Mexico. In Mexico's governing assembly heavy debates on the issue ended up with the majority supporting these slaves, allowing them to own land, to farm, to become part of the Mexican social fabric.
Mexicans were willing to die so blacks could be free.

The invasion, led by a more powerful U.S. army against a mostly poor and subjugated Indian population (including lots of African-Mexicans, who make up the great third of Mexico's racial heritage) killed upwards of 25,000, mostly civilians, when there was less than eight million people. This invasion was soon denounced around the world. The national and international outcry forced the U.S. to back off from taking over all of Mexico and to pay $15 million for more than half of Mexico's territory (this amounted to less than .002 cents per acre).

Unfortunately, for Mexico, the U.S. obtained 60 percent of Mexico's mineral wealth, including gold and oil that were eventually discovered and exploited by U.S.-based interests and companies. If Mexico still controlled these lands, it'd have eventually become the world's largest oil producer.

Today Mexico has the world's highest poverty rate (with 60 percent unemployment and underemployment), the city with the highest murder rate in the world (Ciudad Juarez, due to the recent anti-drug lord campaign of President Felipe Calderon, instigated by the Bush Administration), and vast losses of agricultural as well as manufacturing income from the so-called North American Free Trade Agreement.
Millions of Mexicans have been forced to cross the border to the United States to "slave" in the farm fields, the cheap labor sweatshops, and, yes, the landscaping industries. All of which became profitable for U.S.-owners of such shops and industries, profits that have helped keep an economy going, even when many U.S. corporations decided to send jobs--including inner-city jobs--to other countries.

You can't blame Mexicans for this rising joblessness. This is mainly the result of greedy industrial and financial interests who care about as much for African Americans in the South or the urban core--or poor whites for that matter--as they do for Mexicans.

In other words, zilch.

It's time to base our actions and words on our unified histories, our real interests as working people, and not fall into the traps of blaming one another due to race or other nonsensical reasons. Any energy spent by Africans Americans against Mexicans--or Mexicans against African Americans, since this is equally wrong--is energy that could be better spent fighting for justice, economic equity, and a social transformation that benefits our children, our wellbeing, and future generations.

Like I said this is bigger than Mr. Williams. This is about the footprint or legacy we all want to leave in this world--mine will go with the anti-slavery Mexicans just as I join with African Americans who spoke out against Katt William's rant. My impact I hope will be with the growing surge of all peoples against war and poverty as well as to end the control of our homes, jobs, and lives by a smaller and smaller corporate class.

Mr. Williams, you love the U.S.A. so much, why don't you rant against that!

'The Help' reigns again over storm-soaked weekend

"The Help" continues to clean up at the box office, taking over the No. 1 spot with $20.5 million in its second weekend. (AP Photo/Disney, Dale Robinette, File)

(AP) ? "The Help" remained Hollywood's top draw with $14.3 million on a slow late-summer weekend whose business was even more sluggish as many East Coast theaters closed to ride out the storm there.

Irene was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm Sunday, but the weekend already was a lost cause for many theaters in its path. Studio executives estimate that about 1,000 theaters shut down for at least part of the weekend and that business may have been off 15 to 20 percent because of the storm.

"It was a wild weekend," said Dave Hollis, head of distribution at Disney, which released DreamWorks Pictures' "The Help." ''All things considered, to kind of come out with business down only 15 to 20 percent is something to be pretty thankful for."

"The Help" has been the No. 1 film for two-straight weekends. The acclaimed adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's novel about black Southern maids sharing stories about white employers amid the civil-rights movement raised its domestic total to $96.6 million and should cross the $100 million mark Tuesday.

Late August often is a dumping ground for movies with slim commercial prospects, and Irene cut even further into receipts for the weekend's three new wide releases.

Zoe Saldana's action tale "Colombiana," released by Sony, opened in second-place with $10.3 million. Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes' horror story "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," a FilmDistrict release, debuted in third with $8.7 million. Paul Rudd's comedy "Our Idiot Brother," distributed by the Weinstein Co., premiered at No. 5 with $6.6 million.

"Colombiana" features "Avatar" star Saldana as an assassin out for revenge against the drug lords responsible for her parents' deaths. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," produced by Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth," is a remake of the 1970s TV movie about a household terrorized by tiny, savage creatures. "Our Idiot Brother" stars Rudd as a happy-go-lucky guy doing time with his three sisters after serving a short prison sentence.

Business was strong Friday night for "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" in the New York City area, but as the storm crept closer Saturday, theaters either closed or became ghost towns, said Bob Berney, FilmDistrict's head of distribution.

Berney said he stopped by a theater complex in suburban Westchester County Saturday night and only about 25 people had turned out for 7:30 p.m. shows.

"It was just dead," Berney said. "They were open but no one was there, whereas in Manhattan, I think all the theaters were closed."

Studios base their weekend reports on actual revenues for Friday and Saturday and estimates for business on Sunday.

But this weekend's numbers were more of a shot in the dark. Some theaters did not report their weekend grosses, and it was uncertain how many cinemas might remain closed Sunday or how big an audience might turn up in the wake of the storm.

"I think everybody is trying to lean toward conservative estimates," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony, who said "Colombiana" managed to beat the studio's projections of an $8 million opening weekend despite the weather.

Overall business plunged, with domestic revenues totaling $88 million, down 23 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Takers" led with $20.5 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"It's not like this was destined to be a blockbuster weekend, anyway," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "But going to the movies is not a top priority when you're concerned about severe weather."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers also are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Help," $14.3 million.

2. "Colombiana," $10.3 million.

3. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," $8.7 million.

4. "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," $8.65 million ($22.1 million international).

5. "Our Idiot Brother," $6.6 million.

6. "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World," $5.7 million.

7. "The Smurfs," $4.8 million.

8. "Conan the Barbarian," $3.1 million.

9. "Fright Night," $3 million.

10. "Crazy, Stupid, Love," $2.9 million.

Venus a winner at US Open; sister Serena up next (AP)

NEW YORK ? Venus Williams takes these tournaments one match at a time. Not a bad plan for a player who's played only one match since Wimbledon.

Williams returned to tennis on the big stage Monday, winning her first match at the U.S. Open after a two-month break she needed to fight off a viral illness.

"A lot of the battle is just trying to be fit and stay healthy," Williams said after her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Vesna Dolonts. "Sometimes I've been losing that battle a lot. But I do feel like I can play six matches. I need to win them. No one is more in one-match-at-a-time mode than me now at this tournament."

Williams, a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows, came into the tournament unseeded for the first time since 1997, when she was 17 and made a run all the way to the final. Of course, people overlook her at their peril. When healthy and motivated, she and her sister, Serena, are the biggest X-factors in any tournament they enter.

Serena opens play Tuesday against Bojana Jovaovski in much the same situation as her sister ? seeded a lowly 28th after missing a big chunk of the year with an injury. But unlike Venus, who had not played a competitive match since Wimbledon, Serena has had a good lead up to the U.S. Open, winning two tournaments earlier this month.

"I think how she's played has been amazing," Venus Williams said. "It was definitely motivating to see her do so well this summer. But I know she can play. She knows she can play tennis. I know I can play tennis, so of course it's great to see those results. But I know I have it in me, also."

In her straight-sets victory over Dolonts, Williams finished with six aces and maxed out her serve at 126 mph. She won on 15 of her 20 trips to the net and added up a 28-7 edge in winners against the travel-weary Russian, who had arrived in New York only four hours before her match ? a victim to travel delays caused by Hurricane Irene.

Venus, who likes to design her own dresses, came out in her version of the traditional "little black dress, tennis-style," replete with lace and zippers on the back.

"Kind of fun," she said.

Joining Serena in first-round action Tuesday will be defending champion and second-seeded Rafael Nadal against Andrey Golubev and both the top seeds ? Novak Djokovic vs. Conor Niland and Caroline Wozniacki vs. Nuria Llagostera Vives.

The only major upset on opening day was Alexandra Dulgheru's 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over No. 5 Petra Kvitova. Kvitova became the first reigning Wimbledon champion to lose in the first round at the U.S. Open.

She has only won two matches since hoisting the trophy at the All England Club. Asked why she was struggling, she said, "That's a good question, actually."

The player she beat at Wimbledon, Maria Sharapova, had to go three sets Monday for her win. She needed 2 hours, 34 minutes to beat Heather Watson, the remarkably nimble, 102nd-ranked 19-year-old from Britain.

The bad weather stole some practice time over the weekend from Sharapova, a three-time major champion, and she conceded she was far from her best.

"It's just a matter of belief within myself, that no matter how well or bad or good I'm playing, or my opponent is playing, I know I can tough it out," she said. "No matter what the situation is, I have the belief."

In the last match of the first day, 16-time major winner Roger Federer beat 54th-ranked Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to collect his 224th victory in Grand Slam play, tying Andre Agassi for second-most in the Open era. Jimmy Connors holds the record at 233.

"It's just another way of saying, 'Roger, you've been doing many things right throughout your career," Federer said. "It gives me good satisfaction and points me in the right direction, I think."

The only men's seed to lose on Day 1 was No. 15 Viktor Troicki of Serbia, a 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 loser against Alejandro Falla of Colombia.

Other winners included No. 2 Vera Zvonareva, a finalist last year at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open; 16-year-old Madison Keys of Boca Raton, Fla. ? the youngest and, at 455th, lowest-ranked woman in the draw ? who beat 37-year-old Jill Craybas 6-2, 6-4; and No. 12 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who beat her younger sister Urszula 6-2, 6-3.

But surprise 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin of Marietta, Ga., lost 6-0, 7-6 (7) to Romina Oprandi of Italy, falling to 9-29 in 2011.

Oudin said she'll spend most of the rest of this season playing in lesser events, hoping to get some matches, and wins, under her belt to get some seasoning for a long career in front of her.

The Williams sisters, meanwhile, are thinking about now ? despite what the injury report or the seedings might say.

"We've decided to just enjoy tennis," Venus Williams said. "It's such an honor. We'll do it as long as we can. Right now, the end is not really in sight."

Panel ? Environmental Law in China: Implications for ... - Legal Planet

China Dialogue, Asia Society, K&L Gates, and the Business Council on Climate Change are sponsoring a panel on Environmental Law in China: Implications for Bay Area Business on September 27, 2011 in San Francisco.? I will be on the panel with a terrific group of speakers who work on climate change, environmental law, and green/clean-tech businesses.? We will discuss recent developments in environmental law relevant to businesses managing supply chains and seeking green tech opportunities in China.? I plan to focus particularly on the business risks and ethical obligations for U.S. companies raised by growing transparency, rising public environmental awareness, and Chinese civil green group organization (see, for example, controversy over Apple?s environmental practices in China and the Dalian PX protests).

Hope to see you there.? The organizers tell me that the room for the event is already near capacity based on responses to date, so RSVP to usoffice@chinadialogue.net as soon as possible.

Incidentally, Charlie McElwee (on the panel) previously wrote the terrific China Environmental Law blog.? Come ask him why he doesn?t start blogging again!

The official announcement:

Environmental Law in China: Implications for Bay Area Business
September 27, 2011
5:30pm Reception
6:00 pm ? 7:30 pm Event

Location:
K&L Gates, LLP
4 Embarcadero Center, Suite 1200
San Francisco, California

Speakers:

  • Charlie McElwee, Author of Environmental Law in China: Managing Risk and Ensuring Compliance (Mar 2011), climate policy program officer, ClimateWorks Foundation
  • Alex Wang, Visiting Assistant Professor of Law, UC Berkeley Boalt School of Law; former director, NRDC?s China Environmental Law & Governance Project
  • Kristen Durham, Global gateway director, SVB Financial Group
  • Ryan Schuchard, Climate and energy manager, BSR

After decades of unprecedented environmental degradation, China?s leaders have begun to address the severe costs of rapid development. Fears related to food, energy and resource security, as well as the looming threat of social unrest among the middle class, have led to a rapidly changing landscape in environmental laws, regulations and standards. It is imperative for mulitnational businesses to understand the impact of China?s environmental law on their work, and ensure that they remain compliant with changing requirements.

At this chinadialogue event, speakers will discuss recent changes and trends in environmental law and what they mean for Bay Area businesses, including:

  • How China?s environmental regulatory and legal frameworks are structured;
  • How environmental regulations are changing;
  • The development of Chinese ?watch dog? groups and their increasing interactions with multinational
    businesses;
  • And the potential risks and liabilities that accompany non-compliance.

Attendance is free, but space is limited. RSVP to: usoffice@chinadialogue.net

The Pros And Cons Of Buying A Used Car From An Auto Auction ...

The Pros And Cons Of Buying A Used Car From An Auto Auction

Are you in the market for a new used car? If you are, have you ever thought about attending an auto auction? Each year, a relatively large number of individuals walk away with a quality used car from an auto auction and now you may want to think about doing the same.

Although it is nice to know that many have had success with auto auctions in the past, you may be wondering whether attending an auto auction is worth your time. To determine whether or not one is, you may want to think about examining the pros and cons of buying a used car from an auto auction. A few auto auction pros and cons are briefly touched on below.

Perhaps, the biggest pro or plus side to buying a used car from an auto auction is the price. Auto auctions are well-known for their more than affordable prices. Depending on the auto auction that you attend, as well as the car that you choose to buy, you could walk away with a quality used car for as little as a thousands dollars! In all honesty, you never know what treasures or quality used cars you will find until you attend an auto auction. That is why it is advised that you at least attend a local auto auction, even if it is just to see what one is like.

Another one of the many pros or plus sides to buying a used car from an auto auction is the choices that you have. In terms of the used cars that you have to choose from, it is not uncommon for an auto auction to include as many as fifty used cars or more. Many of these used cars include different years, as well as different car makes and models. In keeping with the choices that you have, you also have a choice when it comes to choosing a used car auction to attend. If you live in or around a large city, such as Chicago, you may have more auto auctions to choose from. You could choose to attend an auto auction that gives you the opportunity to inspect each vehicle or you can choose one that does not have any admission fees.

]]>

Although there are a number of pros or plus sides to buying a used car from an auto auction, there are also a number of downsides as well. The good news, however, is that those downsides may not even apply to you. One of the downsides or cons to buying a used car from an auto auction is that not all auto auctions have an inspection session. An inspection session is when you are able closely examine or inspect all of the cars that will be auctioned off. You should never buy a used car without thoroughly examining it first. This downside to buying a used car from an auto auction may not even be an issue, as long as you choose to attend a used car auction that allows you to inspect all of their vehicles first and they are out there.

Another con or downside to buying a used car from an auto auction is the fact that you aren?t really given any guarantees. Perhaps, that is why it is so important that you are able to inspect a used car before bidding on it at an auto auction. When you pay for and receive your used car, it is then yours and you are responsible for it, including all updates and repairs that may need to be made. It is difficult, if not virtually impossible, to find an auto auction house or company that offers warranties on their used vehicles. Of course, buying a used car is a risk anyways, as most used car dealerships, as well as owners outright selling their vehicles do not offer warranties either.

If you live in or around the Chicago area, you may want to examine North Shore Auto Auction. Their online website can be found at www.publicautoauctionnst.com. With regularly scheduled auto auctions, as well as information on those auctions, including the used cars that will be auctioned, North Shore Auto Auctions is known for being one of the best auto auctions in the Chicago area.

We have salvaged cars for sale at everyday low prices. You can even find project cars for sale at our auctions. Please visit the website today for more details on auction times.

an old question that many women, not to mention psychologists, analysts and other professionals have pondered and studied, even for decades, why men are attracted to breasts both? Men do not have their own and probably do not want yet this is perhaps one of the reasons why they are so fascinated by them and feel instinctively drawn to a couple when they encounter a member of the opposite sex.

By: David January 2011 lViews: to attract women

While there is plenty of advice available on attracting women, there may be some ways more diverse and extreme, even to do so. Some believe that a safe and direct approach of their products, while others suggest it shows a total lack of interest will make the putty in your hands. It may seem strange to ignore the object of your attention you will run, but if other men are falling over themselves to compete for your attention to be drawn to you by your apparent indifference.

Death toll lowered to 52 in Mexican casino attack (AP)

MONTERREY, Mexico ? Rescue workers recovered burned bodies and anxious residents crowded behind yellow police tape Friday waiting to hear if relatives were among the victims of a grisly arson attack on a casino by presumed drug traffickers that killed at least 52 gamblers and employees.

Family members arrived at the morgue all through the night in Monterrey, a modern metropolis and one of Mexico's most important business centers that has recently become the target of increasing drug-related violence.

The armed assailants burst into the casino Thursday afternoon and then poured and ignited gasoline, burning the casino to the ground in what President Felipe Calderon described as the worst attack on innocent civilians in recent memory.

Nuevo Leon state Gov. Rodrigo Medina lowered the death toll to 52 early Friday in fire in northern industrial city of Monterrey. He had said late Thursday 53 people had died in the fire at the Casino Royale.

Santiago Loera, 53, came looking for his brother, Miguel Angel, a cook at another casino who had gone to the Casino Royale to sign a new contract.

"We think he's here," Loera said.

Loera said authorities have asked him for a DNA sample.

So far 45 of the victims have been identified

The fire represented one of the deadliest attacks in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels in late 2006.

Francisco Tamayo, 28, of Monterrey, said he and family members looked at about 40 bodies in search of his mother, Sonia de la Pena, 47, who loved to gamble at the casino and was there on average four days a week. They had yet to find her.

When Tamayo learned of the fire from television, he ran to the scene.

"She's probably here," said Tamayo, who repeatedly called her cell phone, only to hear that it was out of the area of service.

Calderon tweeted that the attack was "an abhorrent act of terror and barbarism" that requires "all of us to persevere in the fight against these unscrupulous criminal bands."

Attorney General Leon Adrian de la Garza said a drug cartel was apparently responsible for the attack, though he didn't name which one. Cartels often extort casinos and other businesses, threatening to attack them or burn them to the ground if they refuse to pay.

It was the second time in three months that the Casino Royale was targeted. Gunmen struck it and three other casinos on May 25, spraying the building with bullets, but no was reported injured in that attack.

The fire in the two-story casino, which advertised sports book and bingo, was reported just before 4 p.m. local time (5 p.m. EDT; 2100 GMT), a slow time of day when normally about 80 people played the tables and slots, said former security guard Alberto Martinez Alvarado, 30. Martinez, who was on his way home from work Thursday when he saw the fire, said the casino could hold hundreds, perhaps 1,000 people.

"We're lucky we weren't there," he said. "Why couldn't the people who did this do some honest work instead?"

State police officials quoted survivors as saying armed men burst into the casino, apparently to rob it, and began dousing the premises with fuel from tanks they brought with them. The officials were not authorized to be quoted by name for security reasons. De la Garza said the liquid appeared to be gasoline.

With shouts and profanities, the attackers told the customers and employees to get out. But many terrified customers and employees fled further inside the building, where they died trapped amid the flames and thick smoke that soon billowed out of the building.

Monterrey Mayor Fernando Larrazabal said many of the bodies were found inside the casino's bathrooms, where employees and customers had locked themselves to escape the gunmen.

Authorities commandeered backhoes from a nearby construction site and made a brief attempt to break into the casino's walls as smoke billowed from the main entrance, hindering firefighters.

Maria Tomas Navarro, 42, stood weeping at the edge of the police tape stretched in front of the smoke-stained casino building. She was hoping for word of her brother, 25-year-old Genaro Navarro Vega, who had worked in the casino's bingo area.

Navarro said she tried calling her brother's cell phone. "But he doesn't answer. I don't know what is happening," she said. "There is nobody to ask."

Monterrey has seen bloody turf battles between the Zetas and Gulf cartels in recent months. Once Mexico's symbol of development and prosperity, the city is seeing this year's drug-related murders on a pace to double last year's and triple those of the year before.

Last month, gunmen killed 20 people at a bar in Monterrey. The attackers sprayed the bar with rounds from assault rifles, and police later found bags of drugs at the bar.

State police officials initially said witnesses reported hearing three explosions before Thursday's fire started, but later said a flammable material was used. The officials were not authorized to be quoted by name for security reasons.

The reports of explosions may have been the sound of the ignition of the liquid.

Norma Reyes, 45, was one of the people who received good news Thursday. Her son called her before she even heard about the fire to say he was all right. Jonathan Reyes, 25, who worked as an area supervisor, told his mother he was at the hospital trying to find out what happened to his co-workers.

"God took care of us today," she said.

Sense and Sensuality at Ultimo Science Festival

Wendy Zukerman, Asia-Pacific reporter

Gastronomic artists who ground up beans only to put them back together again. A historical tour through science and design - which revealed some pretty peculiar prophylactics and highlighted the fascinating fact that the tin can was invented whole decades before someone dreamed up the can-opener. While the Ultimo Science Festival in Sydney had already wowed me with stories of dance lessons from Richard Feynman and a researcher who had figured out how to use old tires to create steel, I soon learned that more extraordinary science was in store.

desert_burger_2a.jpg
Dessert anyone? (Image: Georgia Blue Photography 2011)

At Wednesday's "Weird Food Dinner", hosted by Ultimo College, for example, daring chefs exploited the techniques of molecular gastronomy to extraordinary effect.

Our appetiser, created by Diego Mu?oz, a chef at Bilson's Restaurant in Sydney, was prepared through spherification, a process that, as you might guess, creates bubble-shaped bites. "It's an amazing technique," explained Paul Hickey, a culinary lecturer at the College, who assisted in the kitchen for the night. "The inside of the food remains soft, but the outside forms a skin."

Mu?oz had used it to recreate a white bean. He first pulverised the bean and then added calcium chloride. Meanwhile, alginate, which had been extracted from brown seaweed, was mixed into water and set overnight to remove air bubbles. He then dropped the calcium chloride and bean blend into the alginate mixture.

Ions in the calcium chloride then went to work refashioning the long-chain alginate polymers into cross-linked polymers, which created a gel. Since the calcium chloride/bean mixture dove into the alginate as a droplet, the gel retained that circular shape.

In this case, it looked like an extra large white bean. "He has basically turned the bean back into a bean," said Hickey. This resurrected legume was soft and flavourful.

Other intriguing products included dehydrated olives which tasted like salty Panko crumbs, and a warm sorbet made with methylcellulose powder as a setting agent. Unlike most things - like jam or cheese - that melt with heat, methylcellulose becomes thicker when heated.

Yet despite using plain old cooking techniques, the dessert (shown top), created by Ultimo lecturer Nathan Griffiths, was certainly the highlight. A playful twist on burger with fries it consisted of a bun of caramel bavarios, which is basically custard and gelatine, a 'meat' of chocolate tart and a pistachio sponge for the lettuce.

This delicious meal was metaphorically matched by the feast of curiosities I discovered on a tour of the basement at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum of science and design.

All manner of strange artefacts filled the cabinets in the building's bowels, gathered as they were in haste after a fire engulfed the museum weeks prior to its scheduled opening in 1882. It took the curators nine months to buy and beg enough bits and bobs for the museum to open. As part of the festival, I had the rare chance to explore - under the supervision of tour guides Campbell and Geoff.

Watched over by a rocking horse and a stuffed ram, Campbell held up a can of tinned soup from the 1800s, informing me that the invention of the can opener came several decades after the tin can was patented. Until then, he explained, hungry soldiers were forced to open their meals with an axe.

Condom.jpg
Pr?servatif pr?serv? (Image: Penelope Clay/Powerhouse Museum, Sydney)

We moved through the storage cabinets, gazing at ancient clocks, foot powered dental drills and, it turns out, a preserved pr?servatif - a condom from the 1880s. Gobsmacked, I leaned in to touch it. "This condom was reusable," warned Campbell. I quickly retracted my fingers.

Made from the lining of sheep intestine, the antique condom was, somewhat amusingly, donned with a pink silk ribbon at its open end. According to Campbell, lovers would wet the device and warm it by the fire before using it. After they were finished, the condom could be cleaned and pinned on the washing line, ready for next time.

The Ultimo Science Festival wraps up this weekend. And it's a shame. In the name of science, I was getting quite accustomed to high dining and treasure fossicking.

Debt Consolidation Loans 101 ? The Basics Of Loan Consolidation ...

These days, a lot of persons hold many credit card accounts and are also applying for other lending products like usecured bank loans, mortgage loans and auto loan finance. Usually, each has a unique regular payment date which will make controlling them troublesome. This now and then brings about overdue or sometimes missed installment payments, which often could affect credit ratings. If someone finds herself in this type of situation, consolidation may well be an opportunity to get debt back in balance and more workable.

A debt consolidation loan is when a loan is applied for to settle two or more different debts. This sort of method benefits those enduring high rates of interest, more cards than can be taken care of, or somebody that just simply hopes to amalgamate all installments into just one.

Advantages Of Debt Consolidation Loans

1. Reduction Of Rates. Rates of interest are generally marked down on bills and debts. A debt consolidation service provider will make a deal with banking institutions and strive to construct installment payments that can be more achievable.

2. Repayment Plan. A debt settlement agenda is created with loan merchants or even a debt collection organisation. This plan of action will routinely make use of a lowered rate to lower repayments.

3. A Single Montly Installment. A loan combination system requires that you make one payment month to month toward credit card debts and bills. When cooperating with a debt consolidation company, this money is made to the company after which it is separated and dirtibuted to the loan creditors. An array of installments won?t be sent to different creditors with different rates.

4. Decreased Or Removed Late Charges. Any time a debt account is defaulted on, penalty fees, late charges combined with interest starts to accumulate. Every one of these may be lowered or avoided once negotiated in the package.

5. Debt Collection Text Messages Or Calls Finish. Whenever a power of attorney is agreed upon when getting started with a debt consolidation firm, telephone calls from both debt collectors and agencies are prohibited. This prevents them from harassing customers.

6. Free Of Cost Financial Debt Advice. Almost all consolidation corporations give debt counseling for free for those debtors who?re consolidating cash they owe and bills. Counselling will allow a person to investigate his or her situation and go over choices for alleviation.

There are a variety of reasons as to the reasons most people go for credit card debt settlement. One is that the amount of debt is just too big to realistically take care of and then try to evade economic ruin. An additional reason some select consolidation is simply because interest rates have increased and the lender has declined to lessen them. The biggest reason anyone chooses consolidation is that of needing to be free of debt and this is the primary target.

BBC: Coulson took tabloid cash while Cameron aide (AP)

LONDON ? The BBC says the former editor of the News of the World received payments from the newspaper while working as an aide to Conservative leader David Cameron.

Andy Coulson resigned from the now-defunct tabloid early in 2007 after a reporter and a private investigator were jailed for hacking into the voicemails of royal staff.

The Top 5 ?Myths and Truths? About Online Dating for 50-Plus Singles

Press Release Source: OurTime.com on Monday August 22, 2011, 6:00 am EDT

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ ? Even with countless singles joining online dating sites every day, many people are still unsure about this method of meeting. Today OurTime.com, the largest online dating community catering to singles over 50, announced the top five most common misconceptions about online dating. To debunk the myths and learn the truth, site staff turned to OurTime.com?s official Relationship Expert, Dr. Gail Saltz.

?Many singles over 50 are either afraid to get back into the dating game or believe there is still a stigma attached to online dating,? said Dr. Saltz. ?We wanted to do some myth-busting and set the record straight. not only is this one of the most fulfilling times of a person?s life, finding a companion to share it with is easier than you might think ? especially if you use online dating to your advantage.?

Below are the top five ?Myths? and corresponding ?Truths? about online dating for singles over 50.

(1) ?Myth: ?Most single people are much younger than me ? it?s much harder to find people my age.? ?

Truth: The truth is that there are many more potential mates out there than people think. According to 2010 U.S. Census data, almost 30 percent of the 78 million Baby Boomers are single. every day, thousands of those single Boomers venture online to find companionship. And unlike the average social event or stroll through the grocery store, everyone in an online dating setting is single and looking to meet someone. ?

(2) ?Myth: ?I should wait to join a dating site until I?m ready to get married again.?

Truth: The 50-plus singles polled in a recent national survey tend to be less interested in marriage than they are in companionship and long-term relationships. Helping to relieve the pressure to marry is the fact that singles in this stage of life are generally free of the expectations of child rearing and career advancement. this allows them to approach dating from a more relaxed perspective. Their main objective is simply to live life to the fullest, and to find someone to share the good times with.

(3) ?Myth: ?Online dating is risky.?

Truth: Dr. Saltz tells singles that whether they met online or in the real world, keeping a few simple tips in mind will ensure a safe and positive experience. For starters, always meet in public and drive yourself to and from the first few meetings; tell a friend about your plans for the date; Google your date?s name in advance to see what comes up; limit your drinking and don?t do anything that would impair your judgment; and finally, listen to your instincts. If something doesn?t feel right, just move on. The right person for you is out there somewhere.

(4) ?Myth: ?Online dating is expensive and takes a lot of time and energy.?

Truth: some of its main advantages are that online dating is efficient, convenient and cost-effective. you can take things at your own pace, from the comfort of your home, at any hour of the day or night. this allows you to expand your pool of potential matches and be in control of when, where and how you meet other singles. Membership costs at OurTime.com average less than $5 dollars per week. That?s less than many people spend on coffee!

Meeting interesting new people and finding a romantic partnership are great ways to support one?s overall health and happiness (read: increase energy!). a whopping 97 percent of OurTime.com users agree that romantic relationships are good for one?s health. And 93 percent agree that having a romantic relationship is an important part of overall happiness.

(5) ?Myth: ?People will judge me if they know I am dating online.?

Truth: these days, everyone knows someone who met their mate online. And the results are often extremely positive: one in five new relationships and one in six new marriages began with an Internet date. In the last year, the number of dating site users 50 years of age or older has grown twice as rapidly as any other age group (comScore).
