Long before her days as a Cosmo-sipping New Yorker, Carrie Bradshaw was a high-school girl with swim meets and crushes and BFFs. It's all recorded in The Carrie Diaries, Candace Bushnell's young-adult prequel to Sex & the City, and it might just be coming to a TV screen near you.
The CW is considering a TV adaptation of The Carrie Diaries, and according to Deadline, Gossip Girl executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage could helm the project. (FYI: It's too early to say who might play Carrie, but last May's book release of The Carrie Diaries naturally led to speculation about who would play the title role in a screen adaptation.)
The irony is delicious: Gossip Girl is currently the closest thing to a teen version of HBO's iconic show, and now it's producers may actually tackle Bradshaw's teenage life.
On the other hand, the young Carrie of the book is hardly a Manhattan socialite, hailing taxis and shopping for handbags. She's going to school in suburban New England, and she's worrying about being the last of her friends to lose her virginity. While she does eventually end up in New York City for an internship, she's no Blair Waldorf, my friends.
And that's probably just as well, since Gossip Girl's ratings these last few seasons are less than half of what they used to be. Maybe it's time for another spin on the coming-of-glamorous-age concept.
