tastecard1 Review of Taste Card TrialI have a one month free trial of the Taste Card restaurant discount card.? I haven?t had great success with the card, partly because we live in a small town in the north east England where there aren?t any restaurants accepting the Taste Card. We were in Oban at lunch time in the middle of last month but there was only one Taste Card member there which was only open in the evening. So when we were in Edinburgh a few days ago I thought I?d have more opportunity to use the discount card there. We were meeting one of our sons for lunch in Leith, so I checked out restaurants there which accepted the Taste Card.? As there were three of us, I was looking for ?50% off the food bill? offers versus ?2 for 1? offers which often only apply to two diners. We decided to go the Raj on the Shore Indian restaurant as it did ?50% off food bill? and had lovely views over the Water of Leith.

As it turned out it was cheaper to eat from the ?5.95 lunch offer which included a poppadom starter, a choice of most main courses from the a la carte menu served with nan or rice and either wine, lager or a soft drink. Whereas eating from the a la carte menu, most main courses cost ?10 plus ?2-?3 for man or rice, therefore ?6 for only the main course with no drink or starter. However I reckon that if you ate at the Raj on the Shore in the evening, when there were no in-house offers, you could save money.

In summary, you need to compare any set menus and special offers available at the restaurant to work out if the Taste Card is really going to save you money. In my experience, many restaurants have offers at lunch time so you?d be more likely to make savings if you dine out in the evening. However many restaurants which accept Taste Cards exclude meals on Friday and Saturdays. Most restaurants which are Taste Card members are mid range restaurants; if you want to eat out cheaply you can probably find lunch time deals like a Chinese buffet at Jimmy Chungs or an Italian buffet at Pizza Hut for around ?7. However if you are looking for something a bit better quality especially for an evening meal (excluding Friday and Saturday) and live in or close to a city with plenty of Taste Card members, buying a Taste Card could save you quite a bit of money.
