The bond between a grandparent and grandchild can be incredibly strong. There is something special about that skipped-generation relationship. But sometimes family conflict between parents and grandparents can keep grandchildren from seeing their grandparents. This was apparently the situation in a recent Alabama grandparent?visitation?court case that rose all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The case involved an Alabama?family, in which paternal grandparents, parents and two granddaughters spent time together frequently until a failed business venture between father and grandfather came between them. The parents eventually cut off all contact between their daughters and the paternal grandparents. The grandparents were left heartbroken ? resorting to posting signs on the road and attending public events where they knew their two teenaged granddaughters would be present. Eventually, they went to court to ask for regularly scheduled time with their granddaughters, and in 2008 a judge granted them visitation.
But a state appeals court and later the Alabama State Supreme Court ruled in favor of the parents. The grandparents appealed to the highest court in the land, seeking a ruling on whether it violated constitutional due process to use the ?harm standard? in determining these cases, but the U.S. Supreme Court?recently?declined to hear the case with no comment.
Grandparents? legal rights?vary from state to state. The harm standard is used in as many as 18 states, requiring grandparents to prove that grandchildren will be harmed if they do not have a relationship with grandchildren, or perhaps that the parents are unfit.
Approximately 19 other state laws use the ?best interest standard.? In those states, the grandparent must prove that it is in the best interest of the child to have a relationship with them. It is much harder to prove harm than to convince the court it is in the best interest of a child to see grandparents.
It makes me so sad to hear of these cases, primarily because the children are the ones who are in the middle and stand the most to lose. Conflicts between parents and grandparents are at the root of these cases and the children become pawns in the struggle. So how can families avoid getting to this point?? Here are my suggestions:
1.????Remember: It?s about the child.?Remain clear that everyone involved wants the child to be happy and healthy. The child should be the focus ? not the unwitting weapon to use against other family members.
2.?????Grandparents:?Respect boundaries that parents set in regard to their children?s time, gifts, activities, topics of conversation, clothing, discipline and other rules. Just have the expectation that you will not agree on everything, because you won?t. And that?s OK. Accept it.
3.?????Parents:?Know that your children can benefit greatly from relationships across generations. Every child does better in life with more loving adult relationships and supportive attention. Many grandparents also provide financial assistance to grandkids, such as helping support their education. They give a child a sense of family history and roots. Weigh these things when you consider a fight. Do you really want your kids to suffer because you don?t get along with your parents?
4.?????Deal with the old demons. You know ? the issues from 20 or 30 years ago that had nothing to do with these children yet somehow keep creeping into your thoughts and interactions. The things that build up and bite you when you least expect them. Become fully aware of them. Find a way to accept the past is the past or work them out with your family members now. Don?t let old baggage hurt the children.
5.?????Keep talking?? no matter what.?When family relationships are strained, remember that these things often blow over or heal with time. You can still have cordial family time together for the sake of the children, even if it?s less frequent, certain subjects are taboo, or parents and grandparents agree to disagree. Let go and move on as a joint support system for the children. Later in life, you?ll be glad you did and that you provided a role model for the children on how to treat their parents.
6.?????Listen ?to the children. What do the children want in this situation? Even little ones have opinions. Let them have their say.
7.?????If all else fails, avoid?going to court.?Everyone loses. Instead, try new ways to form agreements. Family counseling may be helpful, or engage a respected family friend, faith community leader or a?trained family mediator?to help you. Decide on boundaries, time together and even details like what topics of conversation to stick to among the generations. It?s not about the ideal agreement ? it?s about what you can live with for the sake of the children.

Another Year, Another iPad, Another ?Delicious Addiction? From Apple

The 3 million iPads that Apple says it sold over the device?s first weekend (March 16-18) in the market is an impressive number no matter how you slice it. Which won?t keep me from slicing it. I imagine some of those buyers are like me: first-generation (2010) iPad owners who didn?t pony up...

Betta Splendens (Fighting Fish)?are originally from South East Asia. They can be found in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia. They are usually found in slow flowing streams, rice fields, large puddles or in mud holes.
The wild bettas look very different and are not like the one we will have in our classroom. They are very plain with only a little colour. After many years of breeding by Thailand farmers and other international breeders they now have some wonderful colours.
For more information about Betta Splendens?click here.
The picture on the right and the video is of the Betta fish we will have in the class. He will be in the classroom next week and will stay in the big tank till next term when the aquarium will be ready for the other fish. I will then move him to another aquarium in the classroom.
Leave a comment with your suggestion and then I will make a poll so we can vote.
NEW YORK (AP) ? More adults visited President Barack Obama's campaign website in January than the four Republican hopefuls combined.
That's according to Nielsen Co., which analyzed voter-aged traffic to the official presidential campaign websites.
About 4.2 million people visited Obama's site, compared to 830,000 for Ron Paul's and 773,000 for Mitt Romney's. Just 696,000 people visited Rick Santorum's site and 609,000 visited Newt Gingrich's.
Women made up more than 60 percent of all traffic to Santorum's site, the largest gender split of any candidate. Only Paul and Gingrich drew more men than women.
Gingrich's audience was the most affluent and educated, with half having at least a bachelor's degree and 27 percent making over $100,000 per year.
More than half of Obama's visitors were over age 50 compared to 34 percent for Romney.

ROME (AP) ? Thanks to two Marios, Italy's image as the fun-loving land of the bunga bunga party but unreliable partner in Europe is under reconstruction ? sparking cultural shifts at home.
Premier Mario Monti, an economics professor who succeeded Silvio Berlusconi, is creating renewed confidence in Italy ? among investors, political partners and crucially Italians themselves. Mario Draghi, as head of the European Central Bank, basks in acclaim leading an institution that holds sway over the EU economy.
The two Marios, both in their roles since November, have the seal of approval from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a key figure in Europe's drive to save itself from ruin.
"If you want to hear something positive about Italo-German cooperation, I can say this: I highly appreciate the work of Mario Draghi, and it goes without saying that I appreciate that of Mario Monti," Merkel told reporters last week after meeting with Monti in Rome.
That's a sea change in Italy's image among its key European allies.
One of the last times Merkel was in Italy, she was greeted by then-premier Berlusconi who popped out from behind a pillar calling "cuckoo!"
Berlusconi enthralled Italy with his charisma and success, and humiliated it with an endless stream of sleaze that included tales of trysts with underage prostitutes, shameless cronyism and rampant corruption that fostered an entire culture of cheating.
Monti, a sober former EU competition commissioner who heads a government of experts, is challenging Italians through his policies to become better citizens. In Italy, being "furbo" or clever, but also carrying a pejorative sense of gaining an underhand advantage, has sometimes been more prized than hard work.
Berlusconi was seen as an exemplar of that kind of Italy.
Monti is putting the spotlight on another side of his nation ? one of quality, precision and world class intellectual achievement. As the former head of prestigious Bocconi University, Monti embodies this spirit ? as does Draghi with his background at MIT, where he earned his economics Ph.D.
Monti says he wants to instill a culture of merit, doing away with privilege that has made economic mobility in Italy among the lowest in Europe.
Tax evasion, long tolerated on many levels despite costing Italy between ?120 billion to ?150 billion a year, has become a priority from senior politicians to the baker next door. In recent weeks, raids on posh resorts and ordinary businesses have led evening newscasts.
In an unprecedented show of transparency, Monti and his Cabinet ministers have published their tax returns and financial and real-estate holdings on their ministry websites.
Monti also has set out to vanquish the image of women as sex objects that Berlusconi did much to foster, appointing three accomplished women to ministerial posts with substantial portfolios.
Berlusconi also had women in his Cabinet but few doubted they were selected more for their sex appeal than for political qualifications.
The changes are being seen in all walks of life ? even the sex symbol-spawning fashion world.
Giorgio Armani, at his recent womenswear fashion preview for his Emporio line, put his models in flat shoes, saying Italians had grown tired of vampish women that became the prevalent archetype under Berlusconi. And the recent San Remo musical festival, usually a freewheeling affair, showed how discredited the sex symbol has become, as commentators and politicians criticized an Argentine-born starlet for allowing TV cameras a peek at an intimately placed tattoo.
Tough economic choices have been central to Italy's new image.
In tandem, the two Marios have worked to lower Italy's borrowing costs, which shot above the perilous 7-percent mark for benchmark 10-year bonds last year, endangering Italy's ability to manage its public debt, the highest in the eurozone. Yields this week were at a safe 4.77 percent.
Monti has passed austerity measures and an emergency package to shake open competition, and is working on loosening labor regulations ? all of which have helped restore confidence in Italy.
Draghi has contributed from his offices in the ECB tower in Frankfurt, where he has shown boldness in shaping European monetary policy.
The central banker did not hesitate at his first meeting as president in November to surprise markets with an interest rate cut. And he reportedly upset the president of Germany's conservative Bundesbank by loosening rules for banks to obtain ECB loans.
It was a lifeline many experts say brought Europe's economy back from the brink of catastrophe.
For now, at least, Italians are demonstrating great faith in their new leadership.
A poll taken at the end of February for Repubblica.it showed Monti garnering a 59 percent approval rating, up 2 percentage points in a month even after piling on new austerity measures. The poll of 1,000 people had a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
"He is making the situation better in this country," said Alessandro Scala, visiting Rome from Bologna. "He is taking some important steps, he is improving the situation, even though he inherited a country that was not easy to govern."
Marco Camisani Calzolari, an Internet entrepreneur, plans to name his son, due in a month, Mario. OK, so it's his father-in-law's name ? but he proudly says it now gains a cachet that didn't exist when the child was conceived.
"It's a successful name," Calzolari said. "It's in fashion."

With all the pictures people have posted on photo-sharing websites such as Flickr, someone could almost build a map of all the structures in the world. Almost, but not quite. Some places are far more popular in photos (the Statue of Liberty) than others (the laundromat). People also tend to take pictures of the front of buildings and monuments. ?"Flickr has thousands of photos of the front of the Lincoln Memorial," Fabian Bustamante, an engineer at Northwestern University, said in a statement. "But who takes a picture of the back? Very few people."
So Bustamante developed an Android game called Ghost Hunter. Players get a map of their neighborhood with ghosts shown on it. They track a ghost until they get close, when the map will switch to an augmented reality screen that shows a video stream of the surroundings with arrows pointing toward where the ghost is. Players follow the arrows until they get the ghost in their crosshairs, then zap! Each zapped ghost earns them points. ?And as they're zapping, the phone actually takes a photo of the place.?
In this way, Bustamante got pictures all around the Charles Deering Library on Northwestern's campus. He compared those photos with photos of Deering Library on Flickr and found that Flickr photos were much more concentrated at the front of the building.?
He also adjusted the game and got it to capture noise in the locations where players zapped ghosts. He got data from a larger area of Northwestern University compared to another application he made that asked people to record noise as they walked around Northwestern University in their daily lives. ?
He calls the program, which convinces people to gather the data scientists want by making it into a game, "soft control" of crowds. Such "soft control" games could also encourage people to go to unusual places and collect data about air quality, traffic or anything else researchers want to study, Bustamante wrote in a paper he presented February 28 at the HotMobile conference for mobile apps. ?
The data Ghost Hunter gathers is rendered anonymous before researchers get it, Bustamante wrote in his paper. The game doesn't ask players to give up more private information than other location-based apps, such as Foursquare and Gowalla. It could potentially lure people into unsafe places, so it depends on the player's own judgment about whether to follow ghosts. If Ghost Hunter and similar games were widely used in the future to help scientists gather data, they will have to tell players that's what they're doing, Bustamante said.?

Those that have multiple sex partners might be vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Sexually transmitted diseases might display slight or absolutely no symptoms, still can severely affect ones health and fitness. Consequently, regular sexually transmitted disease examination is necessary for the health of folks who are sexually active with multiple companions .
You can get a lot of unique tactics to check for sexually transmitted illnesses. Many std testing require some sort of blood check. A number of sexually transmitted diseases that need a blood test for diagnosis are HIV, syphilis, hepatitis and sometimes herpes. Sexually transmitted disease testing intended for various other infections, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, along with HPV, is performed using a urine analyze or genital tissue sample.
A blood check for STD screening is carried out at a medical center. A health care provider gets a blood sample from the individual, and sends it to the laboratory to be analyzed. For genital herpes diagnosis, the blood examination might not be definitive; additional testing could be needed. In case a person?s blood test returns positive for a STD, she or he ought to stick to the physician?s recommendations for treatment procedure and also tell his or her sexual partners.

NEW YORK, MARCH 14, 2012 Researchers have identified a set of genetic abnormalities in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) that doctors can use to more accurately predict patients' prognoses and select treatments that are most likely to benefit them. The study, led by investigators at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, will be published in the March 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
"Our study shows that genetic profiling makes it possible to more precisely categorize which patients are most likely to have their leukemia return after treatment," says the study's lead author Ross Levine, MD, a member of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Human Oncology Pathogenesis Program. "We also want to use existing therapies more intelligently. It helps a great deal to know which subset of patients will actually benefit from intensive therapies, such as a higher dose of chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant," adds Dr. Levine, who is also a medical oncologist on the Leukemia Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
At present, clinicians rely on only a handful of known genetic biomarkers (early markers of disease) to predict outcome in leukemia patients, and these biomarkers provide useful information for only a subset of patients. For most people diagnosed with AML, it is difficult to predict the chance for a cure.
The method used in the study incorporates information from an array of genes and allows nearly two-thirds of patients to be categorized into clearly defined prognostic groups. "Our goal was not to ask whether a certain gene or two raised or lowered risk, but to determine whether a combination of characteristics from a set of genes made it possible to precisely stratify patients according to risk," Dr. Levine says.
The researchers analyzed blood or bone marrow samples from 502 patients with AML who were participating in a clinical trial. Such samples are routinely taken for research purposes during trials with patient consent. The trial, led by Martin S. Tallman, MD, Chief of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Leukemia Service, explored whether increasing the standard dose of chemotherapy in AML patients under age 60 would improve survival.
The team that performed the genetic analysis, which included investigators from Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Weill Cornell Medical College, and other institutions, analyzed the samples for abnormalities, or mutations, within 18 genes known to have alterations in people with AML. The researchers noted the relationship between the mutations present in each patient and how that patient ultimately fared with the disease receiving either the standard or increased chemotherapy dose.
"Our findings have important clinical implications for patients with AML, demonstrating that genetic profiling can improve current prognostic models and help guide therapeutic decisions so patients have an optimal result," says Dr. Tallman, who is a co-author of the new study. "Moving forward, the challenge will be to provide this genetic information in a timely and affordable way to influence treatment decisions prospectively," he adds.
The analysis allowed the researchers to determine specific risk levels for a variety of gene-mutation combinations. They also were able to establish that the higher chemotherapy dose used in the trial benefited only some of the patients. The investigators took into account variables such as patient age and gender and validated the results in a separate group of patients to ensure that the profiling approach will be generally applicable beyond the current trial.
Dr. Levine and his Memorial Sloan-Kettering colleagues are working to translate the results from the study into clinical use. "We've already developed genetic tests, which can be used to test for this set of mutations in patients, and we're in the process of making sure they work well in practice," he says. "We have preliminary evidence that they perform well, and we're hoping to have a pilot study soon as a step toward getting it into the clinic. We want to show this approach can be used not just at Memorial Sloan-Kettering but throughout the leukemia community."
The American Cancer Society estimates that 13,780 people in the United States will be diagnosed with AML in 2012 and that more than 10,000 people will die from the disease.

Primary Health Care
The Canadian system of primary health care provides services to individuals, families and communities. It also involves a proactive approach to preventing health problems and provide for better management and follow-up once a health problem.
These services are funded by general tax revenues from the sale at no direct cost to the patient.
A patient may be referred for specialist care in a hospital or an institution of long-term care or community. The majority of Canadian hospitals are operated by community boards, nonprofit organizations or municipalities.
Health services are primarily long-term institutions, paid for by the governments of the provinces and territories, while room and board are paid by the individual, in some cases are made available, such payments by the provincial and territorial subsidies.
Health services can also be at home and / or community provided. Referrals to home care, by physicians, hospitals, community organizations, families and potential residents are carried out.
These services, including nursing stations, homemaker services and adult day care, are people who are wholly or partially unable to work. Needs are assessed and services are coordinated to ensure continuity of care and comprehensive care.
Provincial services
The provinces and territories a cover for certain groups of people ? the elderly, children and welfare recipients, for example ? for the health care system that are not generally funded by the public health system covered.
These additional health benefits often prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, medical equipment and appliances (prostheses, wheelchairs, etc.), autonomy and professional services, such as podiatrists and chiropractors.
Financing of the system
As the NHS in Great Britain, Canada provides a good system, but not perfect health. The amount of coverage varies across the country, many Canadians have private insurance coverage through group plans to cover the costs for these additional services.
The Canadian Medical Association estimates that four million worldwide, Canada?s 33 million inhabitants have no family doctor and more than a million people are waiting for processing.
Canada has 2.1 physicians per 1,000 people, while Belgium has 3.9, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Much of the resentment of the healthcare system by the fact that both of Canada?s already high tax goes to her cause. The average Canadian family pays about 48 percent of his income in taxes per year, while prices from province to province, Ontario, the largest population vary, spends about 40 percent of its tax revenue health, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
The association, which campaigns for tax reform and private companies in the health care believes the system suffers from serious financial difficulties. He expects that to increase by the year 2035, Ontario by 85 per cent of their budget to health.
Recognize the federal government and most provinces, there is a crisis: a shortage of doctors and nurses, the state of the art equipment and funding. Are in Ontario, more than 10,000 nurses and hospital workers before layoffs over the next two years unless the provincial government supports the funding, says the Ontario Hospital Association, which represents health service providers in the province.
In 1984, Parliament passed the Canada Health Act, the commitment by the federal government for medical care usually free for all, including 200 000 immigrants per year confirmed. The system is called Medicare (no relation to Medicare in the U.S.).
Despite the financial burden, Canadians value their Medicare as a marker of egalitarianism and independent identity that sets their country outside the United States, where some 45 million Americans have no health insurance.
