Enrique Pe?a Nieto - set to be Mexico's next president - will likely promote the current exploration and production service contractual scheme, Miriam Grunstein of international law firm Chadbourne & Parke told BNamericas.

"Pe?a Nieto no longer speaks about opening Pemex to private equity owners, but rather opening Pemex externally, that is, allowing it to enter into more commercially attractive exploration and production contracts," added the lawyer.

She also highlighted the challenge renewable energy faces in Mexico which still is a hydrocarbon dependent economy with "gigantic commitments to hydrocarbon industry infrastructure."

The first of a two-part interview with Grunstein will be published in this week's Oil & Gas Perspectives, for subscribers.

Grunstein recently joined Chadbourne & Parke's Mexico City office as an international counsel in the project finance and energy group.
